CHAPTER 13

OBSOLETE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

The dictionary defines obsolete as out of date, old-fashioned, antiquated, and of less use. Does this sound similar to anything you’re trying to sell? If you have become too comfortable with selling the same products and services, it’s time to wake up and smell the market. Very few, if any, products last for decades without improvements or upgrades. Look at automobiles: they have been selling for a hundred years now, but how much of the original ones are in today’s models? The concept is the same, but the structure changes regularly. In fact, most cars become out of date every five to 10 years, and companies offer changes in each year’s models. When you see an older car, say 15 years old, driving on the street, don’t you wonder who would ever buy one like that? Would a car dealer stay in business if he only sold 15-year-old looking cars, even if they were new?

Many business owners become too comfortable marketing what always sold well. You might think, “Why change when it’s still doing well?” In part, they’re right—for a while. But if you’re running your business with blinders on, you may get broadsided. Sure, you can keep offering the same products and services year after year until three things happen:

Major improvements in your product become available in the market.
